Dave McKean

When I saw David McKean’s art for the first time, it struck me as odd.  I was 15 years old, the whole world of comic books was opening itself up to me.  Until then, the only comic book art I was familiar with was what dominated most of the shelves in the comic book stores:  Super-Hero comic art.  Dave McKean’s Sandman covers were much different than what I saw on the cover of Superman, Detective Comics and Uncanny X-Men.

I found his artwork very intriguing.  Making me think about what was on the inside of the comic book, that could inspire such an interesting cover?  That’s part of the beauty that is Dave McKean’s art.  It’s like a puzzle you need to solve, so you must buy that comic book now!   Haha!  I’m also delighted to say that Dave’s art appears in children’s books too!  He has teamed up with Sandman Creator & Writer Neil Gaiman (yes, again!) to create unique and creative stories for children.  I cannot tell you how excited my inner fan girl gets, when I check one of these books out from the library, for my daughter.  I feel like we’re both getting something new to read!  Dave has an enormous body of work.  Sandman is just the first place I was exposed to his work, and is only the tip of the iceberg.  You can learn more about all of his work on this very nice fan site.  Dave’s official website is currently turned off because he’s too busy adding beauty to this world.  Thanks for that, Dave!  🙂  Also if you’re interested in buying some of Dave McKean’s artwork please support your local comic book shop.

Micah Evans

Micah Evans is a fabulous glass artist. I’m always blown away by glass art. It’s crazy to me how they can take this stuff that is kind of boring, and then manipulate it to make these beautiful colors and shapes.

Friend Friday: Ron Slack

I love when people make beautiful things out of stuff that most see no value in. In this case, junk and discards and old trash that people just abandon in the desert. I also might be a bit biased, but I don’t think so, as Ron Slack is my dad. A super cool, uber-talented artist and musician dad.

He loves to go out into the desert and just pick up things that most people would kick away, use as target practice, or just ignore because it’s ugly and useless. But not him – he sees such cool things in an old, rusty sardine can and some wind-worn wood.

Dale Chilhuly

Living (temporarily) in Vegas has some advantages. Like going to CityCenter and visiting Dale Chihuly’s gallery, or seeing the installation at the Bellagio. Most of the artists I post I only get to see on my computer screen, but it is so cool to get to see some close-up. And Chihuly’s glass work is pretty impressive close-up.

Kristi Malakoff

Canadian visual artist Kristi Malakoff is amazing.

This is also crazy awesome. She took high-resolution photographs of flowers. 23,000 photographs, to be exact. Then she carefully cut each flower. Then she did this with them.

Amazing! I spent way to much time with my face against my computer staring at that Maypole paper cutting, because wow. You can see more pictures of her absolutely fantastic work, which also includes tissue paper sculptures, amazing cuttings using stamps and money, and giant installations, on her website, kristimalakoff.com. GO LOOK.

Bruno Torfs

In a little town called Marysville, about 60 miles from Melbourne, is a lovely enchanted garden. This garden was full of wonderful creatures and beautiful animals. Then one day a horrible tragedy took place, and a terrible fire wiped out the garden and all that lived in it. But, the creator of the garden loved it so much that he started over, and two years after the tragic fire, it was alive once again.

Bruno Torfs is a fantastic sculptor that watched his wonderful sculpture garden be razed by a brush fire in 2009. Since then, he has rebuilt it and once again has a wonderful garden full of wonderful things.

Hoang Tran

Hoang Tran loves to color. Well, he loves to play with crayons. But not just scribble inside some lines. Nope – he does something a bit more cool.

My artistic skills with crayons involve just the normal coloring page stuff, so this is pretty fantastic.
